music director of the Gewandhaus, founder of the first German
music academy and promoter of Bach’s music – Felix Mendelssohn
Bartholdy. The restoration of Mendelssohn House, home to the world’s
only Mendelssohn museum, was based on the original historic plans.

Easter Atmosphere in Leipzig

Enjoy Leipzig at Easter when the colourful bustle of the Historic Easter
Market makes the city centre feel even more vibrant than usual. Musical
highlight in 2013 is the St. John Passion at Easter with the world famous
St. Thomas Boys Choir and the Gewandhaus Orchestra. The performance
of one of Johann Sebastian Bach’s best known works at St. Thomas
Church is considered an extraordinary experience.

Johann Sebastian Bach lived and worked in Leipzig for 27 years,
during which time he wrote the St. John Passion, the St. Matthew
Passion, the Coffee Cantata and many other ecclesiastical and
secular works of music. Follow in the footsteps of the major German
composer, the organ and piano virtuoso from the Baroque period
in Leipzig. View original manuscripts from Bach’s life in the recently
opened Bach Museum in Leipzig and dine like the St. Thomas Choirmaster
in a historical restaurant right in the heart of Leipzig.
