and is the largest university in the North West.<br />
SCIENCE IS THE MOTOR DRIVING FURTHER DEVELOPMENT<br />
Science is an increasingly vital location factor in the<br />
competition between cities and regions. The North<br />
West is well positioned with a large number of research<br />
institutes – resulting among others from <strong>Oldenburg</strong>’s<br />
year as “City of Science”.<br />
It cannot be said that the <strong>Oldenburg</strong>er Land has produced<br />
a particularly large number of Nobel laureates. With one<br />
exception, Carl von Ossietzky, they tend to come more<br />
from Göttingen, Munich or Berlin. Does anybody mind?<br />
Does it say anything about the significance of science<br />
in the region? Of course not. Particularly not in view of<br />
the fact that in 2008, <strong>Oldenburg</strong> was awarded the title<br />
“City of Science“ for the following year by Germany’s<br />
“Stifter verband” (business community initiative advocating<br />
long-term improvement of the German education and<br />
research landscape), thanks to a concept concentrating<br />
less on the merits of the past but which rather more<br />
entailed betting on the future.<br />
Or, to quote the application document submitted to the<br />
“Stifterverband“, a “vision for the whole city, and a dialogue<br />
between scientists and society to advance its development”.<br />
After all, the “task of responsible science is to<br />
develop future concepts”. The “Stifterverband“ was very<br />
