home to the c-Port at Friesoythe/Sedelsberg in the rural
district of Cloppenburg. The c-Port is mainly responsible
for handling bulk, mass and heavy goods, as well as containers
and general cargo.
The ports are just one element of the logistics hub North
West. The other consists of the services companies en -
suring that goods are brought to and from the ports – by
road, rail and inland waterway. The logistics firms develop
innovative customised concepts and services for handling,
transporting and storing the goods. But they are also
becoming involved to an ever increasing extent in industrial
production stages and trading activities, such as
quality assurance and picking, packaging, stocktaking
or special services such as handling e-commerce, shelf
service and recycling. Uwe Veres-Homm, Head of the
Market Division at the Fraunhofer SCS Institute in Nuremberg,
says that already half of all logistics services needed
in Germany’s companies today are outsourced to special
logistics firms. In a study under his auspices, he estimates
that nowadays only about one quarter of turnover generated
in logistics comes from the original transportation
task, with storage and warehousing accounting for a good
half while handling tasks cover the remaining quarter.
There is constant growth in the flow of goods. Amazingly
enough, the flow continues unabated even in times of
poor economic growth. Goods have to be transported
across ever larger distances, as quickly as possible, at the
lowest possible cost and meanwhile also with the greatest
possible environmental compatibility. One means of
coping with these growing requirements is to invest in
new and in some cases huge logistics centres. In 2013, the
Niedersachsenpark partially located in the rural district of
Vechta witnessed the opening of an adidas distribution
centre for Central and West Europe. The investment
amounted to 100 million Euro and about 500 new jobs
should be created once it is finished. Nordfrost in Schortens
in the rural district of Friesland has concentrated its
focus on the refrigerated sector. In next-to-no time, the
company advanced to 6th place in the world rankings for
refrigerated logistics.
But even the very best logistics concepts depend on one
vital thing: a good traffic infrastructure. It takes well developed
roads, rail links and waterways to bring goods
quickly and cheaply to their destination. All in all, Oldenburg
CCI still sees plenty of potential for improvements
in the region’s traffic infrastructure. “We must close the
gaps in the traffic infrastructure as soon as possible”, says
CCI Chief Executive Felix Jahn. This refers primarily to
Die Logistikbranche im Nordwesten entwickelt innovative maß -
The logistics branch in the North West develops innovative tailor-made
upgrading the Euroroute E 233 between Cloppenburg
and Meppen, construction of the A 20 coastal motorway,
electrification of the railway line between Bremen, Oldenburg
and Wilhelmshaven as well as deepening the river
Weser.
Veres-Homm from the Fraunhofer Institute certainly sees
excellent future prospects for the North West as a logistics
location. Reasons for this include the current business
trends, with additional flows of goods generated by
globalisation and the dismantling of trade restrictions,
new sales channels such as e-commerce, new investors
looking for better returns in industrial sectors than currently
available on the finance markets, and the constant
growth in just-in-time production where manufacturers
seek to operate with minimum stocks. Veres-Homm therefore
sees good chances for the North West to acquire a
large piece of this growing logistics cake, given the low
cost of land here for the necessary logistics facilities
alongside the existing workforce potential – In other
words, ideal prospects for a branch which has meanwhile
become a regional “hot spot“.
