The JadeWeserPort in Wilhelmshaven is Germany’s only deep water port.
a long time, and it was now necessary to find a new use
for the barracks complex. But the city has coped successfully
with the transformation, with a dynamic SME sector
and strong service providers now shaping the picture.
The development of the university has played a major role
in this respect, together with the fact that in 2008, Oldenburg
was awarded the title “City of Science“ for the following
year by Germany’s “Stifterverband” – this is a business
community initiative advocating long-term improvement
of the German education and research landscape. Today,
Oldenburg is seen as an IT centre thanks to the OFFIS IT
institute and the EWE subsidiaries EWE TEL GmbH and
BTC.
And so a great deal has happened since 1867 when the
“Großherzogliche Oldenburgische Eisenbahn” steamed
into the future for the first time.
