Improving animal welfare in livestock farming is one of the
key concerns of the branch.
However, not everything in the branch is sweetness and
light. Agriculture as the producer of raw materials has a
considerable image problem. Industrial methods, factory
farming, the use of antibiotics, soil pollution from animal
excrement (liquid manure) or the conversion of whole
swathes of farmland to maize crops are just a few of
the developments that face increasing criticism and decreasing
acceptance from society at large. “Consumer
expectations are changing”, agrees Schaeper, CCI Chief
Executive.
The branch has recognised the problem. Practitioners and
scientists are working hard on new concepts in all areas.
One of the leaders in this movement is the Agriculture and
Food Forum Oldenburger Münsterland – AEF. Following
guidelines for farmers on reducing the use of antibiotics,
the AEF has produced a statement on improving animal
welfare in livestock farming. “We want to make measurable
improvements in livestock farming on the basis of scientific
findings together with practically tested husbandry
conditions, and bring things in line with society’s expec -
tations in terms of economic compatibility”, is how
AEF Chairman Uwe Bartels explains the core statement.
“There is a willingness to change. But the process will take
time”, emphasises Schaeper. His advice to the branch:
“Don't limp along behind but instead, accept how things
are involving and treat this huge challenge as a huge
chance.“
