port. Although the start was disappointing for many, the<br />

prospects are good in view of predictions for a dramatic<br />

increase in sea freight handling. Furthermore, even without<br />

the JadeWeserPort, Wilhelmshaven, with more than<br />

25 million tons, already accounts for more than half the<br />

handling activities of all the sea ports in Lower Saxony and<br />

ranks third on a national scale after Hamburg and Bremen.<br />

The passenger and bicycle ferry “MS Harle Kurier” operated<br />

by the Warring ferry company takes us across the Jade<br />

Bight – at least in the summer months – to Eckwarderhörne<br />

in the rural district of Wesermarsch. Here too the<br />

ports play the first fiddle in economic terms, particularly<br />

on the river Weser. Brake with its focus on handling fodder<br />

is Lower Saxony’s sea port Number 2. Nordenham as one<br />

of Germany’s largest privately operated public sea ports<br />

has specialised in bulk goods while also becoming established<br />

in recent years as a service port and production site<br />

for the offshore wind energy branch. Indeed, many companies<br />

have emerged in the Wesermarsch in the meantime<br />

as suppliers for wind turbines. Shipbuilding is also<br />

significant, with shipyards specialising in lifeboats and<br />

exclusive yachts. Otherwise industry here is dominated<br />

by electrical engineering, metal construction and aircraft<br />

technology. Here too, one of the world’s two major aircraft<br />

manufacturers has a large supplier plant. And the But -<br />

jadingen peninsula also gives the Wesermarsch a tourist<br />

highlight in the Waddensea as a UNESCO world heritage<br />

site.<br />

From Lemwerder at the southern tip of the Wesermarsch,<br />

we move on to Delmenhorst. In recent decades, the town<br />

has transformed from a typical industrial location into a<br />

retailing and services centre, although it lost half its indus-
