GARDENING FOR PLEASURE<br />

This practical gardening course is ideal whether you are new to gardening, wanting a career change or interested<br />

in building on your current knowledge. You will develop the basic skills you need to complete a range of gardening<br />

activities and make your own garden look stunning. You cover the following topics: planning your spring garden,<br />

compost & compost making, friends & foes in the garden, digging your soil, testing your soil, how to fertilise your garden,<br />

planting out techniques & plant maintenance, plant propagation including taking cuttings & division of herbaceous<br />

perennials and cropping and harvesting both flowers & vegetables.<br />

THE WEEKEND GARDENER: WILLOW WEAVING<br />

On this course you will learn how to design, construct and create willow structures in the garden and how to care for<br />

them throughout the year. The course involves a very hands on approach with lots of practical tips on how to be a<br />

GARDEN CRAFT WORKSHOPS: HARD LANDSCAPING - HORIZONTAL SURFACES<br />

This is the first module of two covering the essential skills required for construction work in the garden. You will cover<br />

horizontal surfaces to include paving, patios and decking looking at setting out, tools, equipment and construction skills.<br />

The practical work will be carried out on the grounds of <strong>Shipley</strong> <strong>College</strong> and within the <strong>College</strong>’s landscape construction<br />

This is the second module of two covering the essential skills required for construction work in the garden.<br />

You will cover vertical surfaces both walling and fencing. You will study setting out, tools and equipment required and<br />

construction skills. This practical work will be carried out on the grounds of <strong>Shipley</strong> <strong>College</strong> and within the <strong>College</strong>’s<br />

landscape construction unit.<br />

PESTICIDE SPRAYING<br />

If your job involves the use of chemical pesticides, regulations will affect your working practices. <strong>Shipley</strong> <strong>College</strong> is<br />

running a series of courses covering all the relevant legislation and codes of practice that regulate the safe use and<br />

application of pesticides. The modules are: Safe Use of Pesticides (PA1) and Pesticide Applications - Handheld Sprayers<br />

(PA6). The course is assessed through both a practical and written examination. The practical exam will take place on the<br />

week after the course is completed.<br />

progress further in my career. I was given great feedback about the Horticulture courses from tutor<br />

Christine, therefore I enrolled. I find the course is fantastic; it’s very intense as we are only in 1 day a week<br />

but it keeps me busy.’<br />
