SUCCESS STORIES - PROFESSIONAL GOALS...
Lawrence receiving his Certificate in Practical
Horticulture from Tim Upson, the Director of
Horticulture, RHS.
Michaela and Sarah have completed Childcare
courses and Health & Social Care Level 1 at
Lower Grange Community Centre and are now
working towards their Preparing to Work in
Adult Social Care Level 2 course. They have
started to run a parent and toddler group on a
Friday afternoon, which is becoming increasingly
popular with families in their community.
Michaela says, ‘I chose to study the Shipley College
courses which ran at the Lower Grange Youth &
Community Centre as it is conveniently on the doorstep
for me, allowing me to fit studying around my children.
I progressed on to the Level 2 in Adult Social Care as I am
still unsure which area I want to specialise in, and working
with both adults and children will help me to make this
decision. I would highly recommend a course at Shipley
College. It’s been great for me to learn and meet new
people.’
Sarah says, ‘I chose to progress on to the next level
because I am currently caring for someone, but in the
future I would like to work in a nursing home. I would
recommend the course because although it challenges
me, I really like it. The tutor support has been brilliant
and they are very encouraging.’
Former Horticulture student Lawrence, 29,
started a part-time summer course on Trees,
Shrubs and Turf at Shipley College in 2012, leading
to a year-long Horticulture National Diploma the
following autumn. After completing the course he
landed a year-long traineeship at RHS Gardens at
Harlow Carr Harrogate.
Lawrence says, ‘Working for the RHS was a fantastic
experience that allowed me to learn so much, enabled by
my time studying at Shipley College. The lecturers were
very supportive throughout the course in helping me
to balance demands of outside work commitments with
studying. Ever-enthusiastic teaching split between field
and classroom work helped us to make sense of a vast
subject. I’m currently working as an Intern at Longwood
Gardens in Pennsylvania, USA where I’m continuing
to learn and become more and more excited by the
possibilities of horticulture.’
Jamie started studying on AAT Accounting at
Shipley College after finding a flare for finance
when working in a temping role.
Jamie says, ‘I felt completing my AAT course here at
Shipley College would allow me to develop my skills which
will make it easier to find a job in the future. I really enjoy
the course and feel it will let me develop the skills for the
future with the flexibility to study around my busy family
commitments. I have already recommended the course
to friends who have their own businesses as it would let
them develop their skills in finance and accounting and
enable their businesses to grow.’
