FEEDBACK FROM
BUSINESSES
“The reason why the
apprenticeship scheme
is so successful at UKAR
is because of the great
partnership with Shipley
College. It’s a full team
effort.”
Lynda Daniel, Recruitment Co-ordinator
with UKAR and now an Apprentice
Ambassador for the Yorkshire
and Humber area for the National
Apprenticeship Scheme.
“Your support and the
candidates we have
recruited in the Trust
have played a very
important role in the
Trust’s recruitment plan.”
“After meeting with 4
providers we have decided
to go with Shipley College
as we felt that you had
distinct advantages above
the others... with a vast
amount of experience to
be able to support us in
PROVIDING
EMPLOYMENT
THROUGH
SECTOR-BASED
WORK ACADEMY IN
HORTICULTURE AT
INCOMMUNITIES
SHIPLEY COLLEGE HAS STRONG WORKING
RELATIONSHIPS WITH MANY LOCAL EMPLOYERS,
WHICH REGULARLY LEADS TO STUDENTS
FINDING WORK.
The recent Sector-Based Work Academy in Horticulture
which was run in conjunction with Incommunities Housing
Association is a great example of this. There were
24 adult learners who attended an intensive 4-week
course in Horticulture, and were supported to further
develop their employability skills.
The employers were so pleased with the results that they asked
for more people than originally planned. Of the 23 people who
went forward for interview, a total of 17 were accepted for
full-time work with the Incommunities Grounds Maintenance Team.
One of the learners says, ‘Just wanted to say thank you for the
effort you put in to organising the course, please pass on my
gratitude to the tutors. Courses like this are very useful and I can
see clear benefits for everyone involved. I hope you continue to
offer such programmes in future. Thanks again.’
Feedback from the employer’s perspective, Dean Blomfield,
Assistant Grounds Maintenance Manager says, ‘This arrangement
with Shipley College is a much better system than the recruitment
methods we’ve used in the past. Job applicants have an
opportunity to show us what they can do during the course,
before they even reach the interview stage. I have to say that
having people ready to start work who are already well-trained
and aware of how to work safely is invaluable to us as an
employer.’
