Special Rate Variation Community Engagement Report - Shoalhaven City Council

In my view, Shoalhaven City Council should defer consideration of any special rate
increases for at least a year.
In the meantime the General Manager and staff should work hard to fix the
problems and achieve efficiency, and some Councillors should upscale themselves in
financial and governance matters to properly critique the reports and
recommendations they receive from staff. In this regard, I am sure there are many
very skilled members of the community who are willing to provide free advice and
mentoring, in the interests of what is best for the community.
I understand a review was done 4 years ago, but business improvement is an
ongoing process in a respected, successful organisation.
This wonderful community deserves more than simply putting rates up to cover for
underperformance.

I am writing to express my concern about the rate rises proposed by Council. I
understand that these rises will be:
Noted and included in summary of
submissions statistics
a. 11.5% for 2017 and 2018 after the rate peg proposed by the State Government
b. 6.25% for four years after the rate peg
c. 5% for seven years after the rate peg
I consider these rate rises to be vastly excessive and out of line with inflation which
is currently extremely low. Further I have seen no evidence that services will be
improved.
