a book on solo travel. The
passion for travelling alone
happened to Mint, who is a
28-year-old Thai blogger,
and has been globetrotting
to over 70 countries. She’s
become quite addicted to it
and has written about her
unaccompanied journeys.
Mint said she loved the
way she felt every time
she travelled alone. “The
experience will be your own.
It is your own story that is
deeper. It is the memory that
lasts longer,” she says. Apart
from being the master of
her own trip with no filtered
experience, just spontaneity,
solo travelling is also a path
of self-discovery for her.
Mint has discovered peaceful
moments to reflect – to learn
to overcome loneliness, and
have a new attitude. Her

was inspired by his
father’s ‘once in a lifetime’
year-long travel stories
of the South Pacific and
Southeast Asia back in 1985-
1986. Owen decided to travel
solo for the first time in his
life after graduating from
the University of Colorado.
He spent 8 months making
his way through Southeast
Asia and South Pacific in
October 2015. He enjoyed the
scenery and
hot-tempered tendencies
changed and she has learned
to calm down, appreciate
nature, people and culture
accordingly.
At first, being a young
female who travelled alone
was not easy As soon as she
stepped out of her comfort
zone, dangers awaited.
Mint suggests that you
befriend locals and live
harmoniously with them,
but do not trust anyone too
much. Her attitude of ‘smile
hiking in New Zealand,
scuba diving in Australia,
trekking in Nepal, surfing
in Indonesia, just to name
a few.
During the solo trip,
Owen bought a motorbike
in Vietnam and travelled up
north through the country.
It was a 23 day-long journey
of nearly 2,500km which he
said was one of the greatest
experiences.
On the other hand, there
were many times Owen felt
down, exhausted,
overwhelmed, or
simply homesick, but
making it through
those times with
a smile is one of
the great parts of
travelling.
“When you
encounter a problem
while travelling, you
just simply need to
deal with it. It’s not
like when you are
but keep your guard up’

“My personal rule is to stay
conscious of your situation.
Don’t drink. Don’t go outside
at night. Don’t draw attention.
Be simple as much as possible
and live like the locals. If
there is a problem, like sexual
harassment, I don’t hesitate
to act like I’m very angry and
threaten that I’m going to write
a review online. It works.”

taught me many things, such
as perspective and patience,
how to deal with stress and
how to interact socially
with people from different
cultures and demographics.
I hope I am a better person
after travelling; a more
reasonable person who
enjoys life and doesn’t take it
for granted as much.”
