SAMUI
SPOTLIGHT
OF TRASH AND
HEROES
Many of us want to volunteer, even
on vacation, but it can be difficult and
time-consuming. Being a ‘Trash Hero”
is simple. A few years ago, Sakdadech
Sutsawang and his small group of
friends started to worry about the sea
and the litter pile-up. Their concern
propelled them into picking up garbage
on the beach on Lipe Island, in Satun
province until it became a regular thing.
Trash Hero was born and through word
of mouth, communities became aware
of the group and made it their mission
to join in the cleanup and spread their
volunteer wings.
Trash Hero’s Koh Samui chapter became a voluntary community activity
six months ago. In order to join this eco-conscious event, you don’t need to
pay or sign up. Just show up at the meeting point at Phru Chaweng Seafood
restaurant at 3pm on Sundays and you can become one of the trash heroes –
to help pick garbage and keep the beaches and waters of Koh Samui beautiful.
What began as a small mission has now grown into what is a worldwide
environmental cleanup network. As of April 16, 2016, over 12,000 volunteers
have removed 155 metric tons of garbage in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia,
the Philippines, as well as New York and Prague.
Four the Love of the Caribbean
In Hunter S. Thompson’s novel The Rum Diary, freelance journalist Paul
Kemp is drawn into a love triangle and debauchery in the Caribbean in
the late 1950s. In present day innocence and good times, including casual
ambiance, the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui is bringing back the charm
of hot Caribbean nights at CoCoRum. The beach bar offers cocktail mixes
of flavourful rum and authentic Thai traditional culinary methods that blend
with the Four Seasons’ concept of signature luxury. One is encouraged to
indulge in a intriguing collection of exclusive rums from around the world and
the impressive cocktail menu from the award-winning Proof & Company bar
team. If you don’t fancy rum, then indulge in a handpicked selection of fine
wines, beers from around the world, fresh tropical juices and other nonalcoholic
drinks while nibbling on savoury Latin American influenced bites. In
true Caribbean beat, live music sessions fill the evening with fast rhythms and
stunning views of the Gulf of Thailand and its tropical greenery.
After an upbeat night at CoCoRum, there’s soothing afternoon tea
to consider at KOH Thai Kitchen & Bar on the property to calm
the senses. It’s a great way to pamper oneself in preparation for
the next step of the journey. The menu highlight is coconut
ice cream served in its shell, along with mouth-watering
local and international bites. So sip a cup of tea from
noon to 5pm. fourseasons.com/kohsamui
