HEROES
Many of us want to volunteer, even
on vacation, but it can be difficult and
time-consuming. Being a ‘Trash Hero”
is simple. A few years ago, Sakdadech
Sutsawang and his small group of
friends started to worry about the sea
and the litter pile-up. Their concern
propelled them into picking up garbage
on the beach on Lipe Island, in Satun
province until it became a regular thing.
Trash Hero was born and through word
of mouth, communities became aware
of the group and made it their mission
to join in the cleanup and spread their
volunteer wings.
Trash Hero’s Koh Samui chapter became a voluntary community activity
six months ago. In order to join this eco-conscious event, you don’t need to
pay or sign up. Just show up at the meeting point at Phru Chaweng Seafood
restaurant at 3pm on Sundays and you can become one of the trash heroes –
to help pick garbage and keep the beaches and waters of Koh Samui beautiful.
What began as a small mission has now grown into what is a worldwide
environmental cleanup network. As of April 16, 2016, over 12,000 volunteers
have removed 155 metric tons of garbage in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia,
the Philippines, as well as New York and Prague.
