Patterns by background characteristics<br />

• Contraceptive use among currently married women rises with an<br />

increasing number of living children; 4% of women with no living<br />

child use modern contraception compared with 58% of women<br />

with 1-2 living children, and 66% of women with five or more<br />

children (Table 7.3).<br />

• By region, the use of modern contraceptive ranges from 54%<br />

among currently married women in the Northern and Southern<br />

regions to 63% of currently married women in the Central region<br />

(Figure 7.3).<br />

• Contraceptive use increases with wealth. Fifty-three percent of<br />

women in the lowest wealth quintile use any modern method<br />

compared with 61% of women in the highest quintile (Figure 7.4).<br />

• Half of the women who undergo sterilisation do so by the age of<br />

33.2 years (Table 7.4). The median age at sterilisation among<br />

those sterilised in the past 2 years was age 34.0.<br />
