breastfeeding practices by child’s<br />

age. Sixty-one percent of infants<br />

under age 6 months are exclusively<br />

breastfed. Exclusive breastfeeding<br />

declines with age. Only 34% of<br />

infants age 4-5 months are<br />

exclusively breastfed compared<br />

with 80% of infants age 0-1 month<br />

and 69% of infants age 2-3 months.<br />

Contrary to the recommendation<br />

that children under the age of 6<br />

months be exclusively breastfed,<br />

many infants consume other<br />

liquids, such as plain water (9%),<br />

and complementary foods in<br />

addition to breast milk (18%).<br />
