Overall, the regional campaign
was a success. Local organizing
committees joined hands in an effort
to raise awareness about elder abuse.
Furthermore, organizers promoted
intergenerational activities, which
allowed children and youth to
honour their elders.
celebrations of their elders. The local radio callin
show was hosted by Charlie Arngak (president
of Avataq), Amel Boivin (home and community
care nurse) and Elaisa Irniq from noon to 1:30
PM. They gave information on elder abuse and
received questions and comments from callers.
At 3:00 PM, students, teachers and parents
marched through town. The parade was led by a
fire truck and close by was the Usijiit elders’ van
followed by trucks and cars. Next, all participants
formed a circle around the elders’ home. At 4:00
PM, eight elders and children had tea, bannock
and story telling at the community centre. At 5:00
PM, dinner was served to 20 elders in the centre’s
conference room. Food was prepared and
served by young volunteers. Finally, the municipality’s
recreation coordinator organized games
for seniors. The local organizing committee was
composed of Marion Jones (Wellness Committee),
Elaisa Irniq and Nelly Marcoux (the municipality’s
prevention coordinator).
Overall, the regional campaign was a success.
Local organizing committees joined hands
in an effort to raise awareness about elder abuse.
Furthermore, organizers promoted intergenerational
activities, which allowed children and
youth to honour their elders. We hope that next
June we will be able to touch even more hearts
and give more hugs. Lastly, we would like to thank all those who contributed
their time, gifts and funds to this campaign.
