of Kangirsuk organized a feast for everyone to enjoy, which was a nice and<br />

welcoming gesture. Then another blizzard was in the works. The race was<br />

put to a halt, spending a total of two nights in this community of approximately<br />

350. When the morning came for the Kangirsuk departure, it was<br />

quite the obstacle course crossing the jagged-ice frozen river. There were<br />

a few minor injuries to the team members and their dogs.<br />

Once they had reached and left Aupaluk, the second village on<br />

the itinerary, everything was a smooth sail. However, one of the support<br />

team members suffered a broken leg when he accidently hit a hard<br />

snow bank and another of the team partners needed to get stitches in<br />

his hand. That injury had happened while trying to untangle the traces<br />

connecting the sled to the dogs. Also there was an uninvited four-legged<br />

follower—a wolf. It got so close to one of the teams that the master<br />

of the team nearly pulled out his gun for protection. In the end, the wolf<br />
