Join the Association of Montreal Inuit
The Association of Montreal Inuit holds a bi-monthly feast located
at Imani Family and Full Gospel Church near downtown Montreal.
The location makes it easier for those who live near or at the heart of
Montreal. Their next feast was planned for the last Saturday of August.
The Association’s board members are particularly thankful to Makivik,
which has been their main contributor for the feasts. AMI president,
Allison Irqumia, said, “Without (Makivik’s) kind donations, the feasts
would not be possible. And let’s not forget our generous volunteers
who, time after time, show up last minute to volunteer and make a fun
filled feast. We appreciate your time and efforts.”
Country food is always welcome and
wanted by Inuit living or visiting Montreal and
more thanks were extended to Air Inuit and
First Air for making it possible to receive this
food in a timely manner. At the time of writing,
AMI is looking for three more voluntary board
members: one director and representatives for
the elders and for the youth. The present members
are Allison Irqumia, Annie Hickey, Annie
Pisuktie, and Andy Pirti.
To qualify, one must be an Inuit beneficiary
and have lived in Montreal for at least
one year. Anyone interested in joining AMI
or knowing of someone who would like to
join are asked to contact one of the present
board members at Makivik’s Montreal office
and let them know. Call 1-800-361-7052 or
514-745-8880.
Allison added, “New people, fresh ideas
are welcome. We all have our own talents and
strengths that we share and together we use
them to make a fun team.”
Funding from Nike
Nike recently expanded access to its “N7 Fund” to Aboriginal communities across
Canada. Nike, the well-known manufacturer of athletic shoes and sports equipment,
established the F7 Fund to provide product donations and grants specifically
for Aboriginal youth sports and physical fitness programs. The stated goal of the
N7 Fund is to “help unleash a child's potential through the power of sport”.
The F7 program and fund has been operating in the United States for a number
of years. Examples of activities that have benefited from funding provided
by Nike include the Native American Basketball Invitational which has hosted as
many as 80 boys and girls teams, a 16-team soccer program in San Felipe Pueblo,
and a 400-mile spiritual run by Northern Cheyenne youth. Nike made the N7 Fund
available to Aboriginal communities in Canada at the beginning of 2010.
To be eligible to apply for a grant from the F7 Fund, organizations have to
serve Aboriginal communities, be a registered charity, have a program that has a
sports focus and that serves youth of high school age or younger. The next grant
cycle for the N7 Fund begins in June 2010, but its web site has a form which people
can fill in and be kept informed about the Fund and the application process.
For more information about Nike’s N7 Fund and program, visit their web site
at niken7.com or contact (in Canada) Jackie Blackbird at 905-771-2088.
