Roddy Stewart and Normand Adams are also very skilled at fixing computers.
to dirt in the fan. The trainees are taught how to diagnose these
types of problems and apply the necessary fixes.
Usually after a two-week class (Phase I), Gilles says that a
good participant can analyse and find problems on a computer
and, with the help
of a more experienced
participant,
can start working
on them. He hopes
to eventually see
local computer
technicians in every
Nunavik community.
So far there
are technicians
from this information
technology
trouble-shooting
Owners should ensure that the
computer is kept clean and
dust-free and that there is space
around the computer for air
to circulate.
Aupaluk, Kangirsuk, Akulivik, Puvirnituq, and Inukjuak. There
have been approximately 60 participants over the past three
years in the course.
Gilles said, “First we analyse the problem which takes
approximately 10 minutes. Then, depending
on the problem, we will advise the owner if
the computer cannot be repaired. If it is still
under warranty we advise them to contact the
company to get it fixed. We always try to suggest
the best solution to the client.”
Thomassie Mangiok, president of Ivujivikbased
Pirnoma Technologies Inc., is also a
co-teacher for the program. He said, “Our
technicians have worked on hundreds of computers
in several communities in Nunavik.
Some of these computers had fun and strange
problems—from old Macs needing a fresh
install to computers filled nearly solid with a
collection of dust.”
Thomassie said his company plans to keep on growing and training
technicians, offering services such as custom built computers,
website development and graphic design. Pirnoma presently provides
work for Annie Kristensen in Ivujivik, Abele Napartuk in Umiujaq, Stevie
Qumaaluk in Kangiqsujuaq, Stanley Aloupa in Quaqtaq and Roddy
Stewart in Kangiqsualujjuaq.
Stevie Qumaaluk said, “Optimizing the performance of these
computers makes me feel useful.” He previously worked part-time for
Soleica (a company that sells and services photocopiers in Nunavik)
and at information technologies (“IT”) for the Kangiqsujuaq municipality
(“NV”). An IT support course was being offered in Kangiqsujuaq.
“Our mayor Mary A. Pilurtuut recommended me to take the course and
I have been taking courses since,” Stevie said. “I learned that with computers
all things are possible… The locals where we do our repairs are
proud that Inuit are now fixing computers, where once a year a southern
technician would arrive to fix computers.”
Gilles explains that preventive computer maintenance is very important.
Owners should ensure that the computer is kept clean and dust-free
and that there is space around the computer so the air can circulate. Have a
technician look at your computer about every six months just to ensure that
temporary files are taken out and that your hard drive is in good condition.
He said, “The best advice is to ask someone who knows about computers
