Since our group was so big and so diverse, we were able to tackle issues and situations from all different angles. Some of the group focused their energies on following the policies, some spent time on the “actions”, and some of us did more media stuff and just general Canadian representation. I was one of the northern contacts—if something came up where Inuit or the Arctic was concerned, I was the one to talk to. I also did a lot of throat singing and performing; I even got the chance to perform with ARTCIRQ, the Inuit circus from Igloolik. “Actions” is an activist term that refers to the things that people do to demonstrate, protest or educate other people on social issues. For example, the CYD did an action where we all wore our CYD T-shirts and stood in a line near the Canadian government office with signs that said things like, “I am a Canadian Inuk. I value the sea ice. I feel unrepresented by the Canadian Delegation”. That’s what my sign would have looked like. The point is to get as much media as possible and to let people know what’s actually going on. The actions we did had many purposes, mostly to show the Canadian government that we were not happy with their behaviour, that we are watching them closely and that we intended to relay everything they said and did to the Canadian people. There was one high profile action we did at the end of the conference. We realized that no solid agreement was going to be reached, so a group of youth from all over the world came together as individuals to stage a “sit-in” at the conference centre. It was our last ditch attempt to get into the heads of the negotiators. The last few days of the conference, civil society (non government people) were restricted access to the centre, so on the last day before we were barred from entering, a bunch of us printed signs that said things like “Fair, Ambitious and Legally Binding” and we all sat in the middle of the hall near the plenary room with our signs. We all took turns reading the names from a petition that 11-million people had signed calling for a legally binding deal. After a certain point, we were asked to move. One of our security liaisons approached me (I don’t know why me) and told me that they said we’re a security threat, we need to move. I said, “Climate change is a security threat. We will not move.” The next thing I knew, security personnel were dragging everyone from our spot to the side of the hall. We had been trained already on how to act in that kind of situation so I was not that worried, but then I was the last person sitting at our original spot. The head of security came to my left and said ,“You’re the last one; all your friends are gone. Are you going to move yourself or will we have to drag you too?” 18

I believe that the actions of the Canadian Youth Delegation to Copenhagen were extremely successful. I’m proud to have been part of it and I encourage you all to try things like that!
