Promoting Saturviit Membership<br />
The women who gathered at the Qilalugaq Camp<br />
in Tuaparaat, near Puvirnituq, in the summer of 2005<br />
pledged their support to strengthen the voice of<br />
Nunavik women. The Saturviit Inuit Women’s Association<br />
was conceived with a mandate to promote the status<br />
and interests of women in Nunavik. An action plan was<br />
developed—steps towards the hopes that women at<br />
Qilalugaq Camp expressed for all women of Nunavik.<br />
The goals are more involvement in decision-making<br />
in partnership with governments, local and<br />
regional organizations; finding effective<br />
ways to counter violence, abuse and suicide;<br />
ways to promote healing, positive parenting,<br />
nurturing families and healthy communities;<br />
and ways of helping Nunavik women access<br />
programs, resources and services available<br />
to them. In addition to these pursuits, since<br />
2007 Saturviit has taken a role as advocate<br />
for gender parity and children’s rights.<br />
The Association is open to all women age 16 and<br />
over who are JBNQA beneficiaries. For those who don’t<br />
meet the criteria, and for organizations wanting to be<br />
connected with Saturviit, associate membership is<br />
possible. Membership is free and offers regular newsletters,<br />
announcements about issues and activities, and<br />
invitations to participate in events. Members have the<br />
opportunity to be directly involved in projects and can<br />
sit for election to the board of directors.<br />
