NYHDP Recognized for Social Value<br />
On June 17 th at the Hotel Delta in Québec, the Order of<br />
Québec Social Workers presented an award to the Nunavik<br />
Youth Hockey Development Program as honorary members<br />
of their provincial organization for the work that has been<br />
accomplished under the NYHDP and its Select Program.<br />
Ghislaine Brosseau, general director of the Order, mentioned<br />
that they have been truly impressed and touched by<br />
the high level of engagement and involvement within the<br />
NYHDP and that the amount of work initiated and maintained<br />
inside of it correlates exactly with the perspective of social<br />
workers while putting the emphasis on the strength of each<br />
individual. She acknowledged<br />
that the Select Program, while<br />
using ice hockey as a tool, is a<br />
great way to create a new generation<br />
of good leaders and to<br />
mobilize communities.<br />

Koneak, reiterated that the<br />
Select program is a direct<br />
result of teamwork between<br />
everyone involved. His email<br />
to <strong>Makivik</strong> <strong>Magazine</strong> also states:<br />
“Due to the distances and our<br />
different agendas, I understand<br />
that it was difficult to have everyone there but I can assure<br />
you that Sammy, Lorne, Daniel and François were obviously<br />
some of the people on my mind as you are such a big part<br />
of our team in your respective roles that made the NYHDP<br />
what it is today.<br />
“To be recognized by the Order of Québec Social Workers<br />
in such way truly represents for me an honour that will be<br />
very hard to cap. These people have recognized without<br />
being on sight, that the NYHDP and its Select component is<br />
way more than just a minor hockey structure. They are recognizing<br />
that our structure is in fact a community and social<br />
effort where the sport link to education is used to stimulate<br />
children to do well, in respect to crime prevention…<br />
“It is important to understand that this program would<br />
have never been possible without obtaining the full confidence,<br />
commitment and support of the leaders. When a lady<br />
(a member of the Order) came to our table near the end of<br />
the ceremony to read her message to Pita, I was extremely<br />
touched by it as this lady was right on! She was reading it<br />
from the back of a little receipt, with watery eyes that said<br />
so much: ‘To Mr. Pita Aatami, I wish to you and your team a<br />
long life and the inspiration to continue to be a leader and<br />
the father in spirit to the children of your community. You<br />
contribute to plant a seed of light in their spirit.’”<br />
