SOWSG ATHENS 2011 HOD <strong>Manual</strong> – 2 nd edition<br />

the host country <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Special</strong> <strong>Olympics</strong> World Summer Games ATHENS 2011, the<br />

aim <strong>of</strong> the Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg program is to transport the Flame <strong>of</strong><br />

Hope to as many cities as possible, spreading the message <strong>of</strong> the Games and the<br />

principles <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Special</strong> <strong>Olympics</strong> movement, and creating enthusiasm for the<br />

upcoming Games.<br />

Local Authorities will help with the organization <strong>of</strong> welcoming the flame, displaying<br />

Greek culture and Greek customs. The torchbearers, knowing our country, will<br />

become the best ambassadors <strong>of</strong> Greek hospitality. On the route <strong>of</strong> the Flame <strong>of</strong><br />

Hope, support will be provided by the Host Broadcaster, namely the Hellenic<br />

Broadcasting Corporation, ERT S.A., as well as local stations and media outlets.<br />

Summary:<br />

The Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg Team, serving as Guardians <strong>of</strong> the Flame,<br />

will carry the Flame <strong>of</strong> Hope throughout Greece as well as participating in runs and<br />

ceremonies in Constantinople (Istanbul) and Cyprus until they arrive at the Opening<br />

Ceremony for the <strong>Special</strong> <strong>Olympics</strong> World Summer Games. In total, the team <strong>of</strong> 145<br />

individuals consists <strong>of</strong> 100 police <strong>of</strong>ficers, who represent their respective <strong>Special</strong><br />

<strong>Olympics</strong> and Torch Run Programs, 10 <strong>Special</strong> <strong>Olympics</strong> athletes (3 <strong>of</strong> whom are<br />

Greeks), and support team members.<br />

The Lighting <strong>of</strong> the Flame <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Special</strong> <strong>Olympics</strong> will take place at the Holy Rock <strong>of</strong><br />

Pnyx, opposite the Acropolis <strong>of</strong> Athens, in Greece on the 9 th <strong>of</strong> June 2011 at 11:00,<br />

presided over by the President <strong>of</strong> the Hellenic Republic and many <strong>of</strong>ficials. In keeping<br />

with the tradition, the Flame will be lit by the rays <strong>of</strong> the sun and the entire<br />

ceremony will take place along the lines <strong>of</strong> the original Torch Lighting <strong>of</strong> the Olympic<br />

Games.<br />

Then, the symbolic flame protected by miner’s lamps will travel to two important<br />

centers <strong>of</strong> Hellenism which are connected with the history and culture <strong>of</strong> Greece.<br />

The torch, designed by Zolotas jewellery house, is inspired by ancient motifs and<br />

represents a collector’s item.<br />

Following the Flame Lighting Ceremony, the Final Leg Team will pass in front <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Acropolis, the Herodeios Theatre, the Museum <strong>of</strong> Acropolis, the Parliament and the<br />

Presidential Palace, where a Welcome Ceremony will take place. On Friday the 10 th <strong>of</strong><br />

June, the Torch Runners will be split into three teams and the journey <strong>of</strong> the Flame<br />

will begin.<br />
