At the accommodation venues the Medical Centers will operate on a 24-hour basis.<br />

Key medical staff will be identified by the red sleeves <strong>of</strong> the ATHENS 2011 working<br />

attire.<br />

Designated hospitals have been identified according to the location <strong>of</strong><br />

accommodation, Sport and Non-Sport Venues as well as the scheduling <strong>of</strong> sporting<br />

events. During the Games, these hospitals will operate on a 24-hour basis.<br />

In addition the MedOC will be responsible for managing all medical encounters on a<br />

24-hour basis and will liaise with the Main Operation Center.<br />

An emergency phone number will be provided to all <strong>Head</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>Delegation</strong>s upon<br />

arrival.<br />

8.3 Important notes<br />

� Athletes’ last medical assessment / examination should have been carried out<br />

within the past twelve months before the Games.<br />

� The GOC's Medical Services Department accepts no responsibility for medical<br />

care rendered by individuals who are not designated by the medical<br />

committee, nor does it authorize any individual or group to render advance<br />

care on behalf <strong>of</strong> the medical committee. <strong>Delegation</strong> members who are<br />

accompanied by licensed pr<strong>of</strong>essionals such as a medical doctor or registered<br />

nurse may receive first aid and their usual medication from these persons.<br />

Any care beyond this level can only be provided by a pr<strong>of</strong>essional licensed in<br />

the Hellenic Republic.<br />

� Down syndrome atlanto-axial instability x-rays<br />

For Athletes with Down Syndrome, <strong>Special</strong> <strong>Olympics</strong> requires a full<br />

radiological examination establishing the absence <strong>of</strong> Atlanto-axial instability<br />

before they may participate in sports or events which, by their nature, may<br />

result in hyperextention, radical flexion or direct pressure on the neck or<br />

upper spine. The sports and events for which such a radiological examination<br />

is required are: judo, equestrian sports, gymnastics, diving, pentathlon,<br />

butterfly stroke and diving starts in swimming, high jump, alpine skiing,<br />

snowboarding, squat lift, and football team competition (soccer). If any<br />
