Paul's call for sanctification is clearly rooted in the<br />

concept <strong>of</strong> the unity <strong>of</strong> human nature and reveals<br />

that effective preparation for Christ's second advent<br />

necessitates the preparation <strong>of</strong> the whole person--<br />

spirit, soul, and body.<br />

c. An indivisible, sympathetic union<br />

It is clear that each human being is an<br />

indivisible unity. The body, soul, and spirit<br />

function in close cooperation, revealing an<br />

intensely sympathetic relationship between a<br />

person's spiritual, mental, and physical faculties.<br />

Deficiencies in one area will hamper the other two.<br />

A sick, impure, or confused spirit or mind will<br />

have a detrimental effect on one's emotional and<br />

physical health, as well. The reverse is also true. A<br />

weak, sick, or suffering physical constitution will<br />

generally impair one's emotional and spiritual<br />

health. The impact the faculties have on each other<br />

means that each individual has a God-given<br />

responsibility to maintain the faculties in the best<br />
