Repentance<br />

Not long before His crucifixion, Jesus promised<br />

His disciples the Holy Spirit, who would reveal<br />

Him by convicting "'the world <strong>of</strong> sin, and <strong>of</strong><br />

righteousness, and <strong>of</strong> judgment'" (John 16:8).<br />

When at Pentecost the Holy Spirit did convict the<br />

people <strong>of</strong> their need <strong>of</strong> a Saviour, and they asked<br />

how they should respond, Peter replied, "Repent!"<br />

(Acts 2:37, 38; cf. 3:19).<br />

1. What is repentance?<br />

The word repentance is a translation <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Hebrew nacham, "to be sorry," "to repent." The<br />

Greek equivalent, metanoeo, means "to change<br />

one's mind," "to feel remorse," "to repent."<br />

Genuine repentance results in a radical change in<br />

attitude toward God and sin. God's Spirit convicts<br />

those who receive Him <strong>of</strong> the seriousness <strong>of</strong> sin by<br />

bringing them to a sense <strong>of</strong> God's righteousness<br />

and <strong>of</strong> their own lost condition. They experience<br />

sorrow and guilt. Recognizing the truth that "he<br />
