upon the entire human race."[15] Strong calls the<br />

Sabbath "a perpetual obligation as God's appointed<br />

memorial <strong>of</strong> his creating activity."[16]<br />

Those who observed it as a memorial <strong>of</strong><br />

Creation would be doing so as a grateful<br />

acknowledgment "that God was their Creator and<br />

their rightful Sovereign; that they were the works<br />

<strong>of</strong> His hands, and the subjects <strong>of</strong> His authority.<br />

Thus the institution was wholly commemorative,<br />

and given to all mankind. There was nothing in it<br />

shadowy, or <strong>of</strong> restricted application to any<br />

people."[17] And as long as we worship God<br />

because He is our Creator, so long will the Sabbath<br />

function as the sign and memorial <strong>of</strong> Creation.<br />

2. A symbol <strong>of</strong> redemption<br />

When God delivered Israel from bondage in<br />

Egypt, the Sabbath, which was already the<br />

memorial <strong>of</strong> Creation, became a memorial <strong>of</strong><br />

deliverance as well (Deut. 5:15). "The Lord<br />

intended that the weekly Sabbath rest, if properly<br />
