festivals (Passover, Pentecost, etc.), new moons, or<br />

ceremonial sabbaths (Col. 2:16; cf. Heb. 9:10),<br />

which were only a "shadow <strong>of</strong> things to come"<br />

(Col. 2:17).[21]<br />

With Jesus' death, believers no longer had any<br />

need to deal with shadows--reflections <strong>of</strong> the<br />

reality in Christ. Now they could approach the<br />

Saviour Himself directly, for the "substance is <strong>of</strong><br />

Christ" (Col. 2:17).<br />

As interpreted by the Jews, the ceremonial law<br />

had become a barrier between them and other<br />

nations. It had become a great obstacle to their<br />

mission to enlighten the world with the glory <strong>of</strong><br />

God. Christ's death abolished this "law <strong>of</strong><br />

commandments contained in ordinances," breaking<br />

down "the middle wall <strong>of</strong> division" between<br />

Gentiles and Jews so as to create one new family <strong>of</strong><br />

believers reconciled into "one body through the<br />

cross" (Eph. 2:14-16).<br />
