5. They warned <strong>of</strong> future difficulties<br />

One New Testament prophet warned <strong>of</strong> an<br />

approaching famine. In response the church<br />

initiated a relief program to assist those who<br />

suffered because <strong>of</strong> that famine (Acts 11:27-30).<br />

Other prophets warned <strong>of</strong> Paul's arrest and<br />

imprisonment in Jerusalem (Acts 20:23; 21:4, 10-<br />

14).<br />

6. They confirmed the faith<br />

in times <strong>of</strong> controversy<br />

At the first church council the Holy Spirit<br />

guided the church to a decision on a controversial<br />

issue dealing with the salvation <strong>of</strong> Gentile<br />

Christians. Then, through prophets, the Spirit<br />

reaffirmed the believers in the true doctrine. After<br />

conveying the council's decision to the<br />

membership, "Judas and Silas, who themselves<br />

were prophets, said much to encourage and<br />

strengthen ["confirm," KJV] the brothers" (Acts<br />

15:32, NIV).<br />
