(Gen. 12:1-3; 15:4, 5; 17:1-9). It was closely<br />

related to obedience to God's law (Gen. 18:18, 19;<br />

26:4, 5). The surety <strong>of</strong> God's covenant was the Son<br />

<strong>of</strong> God, who, as the focal point <strong>of</strong> the gospel, was<br />

"the lamb slain from the foundation <strong>of</strong> the world"<br />

(Rev. 13:8). God's grace, then, began to operate as<br />

soon as Adam and Eve sinned. David said, "The<br />

mercy <strong>of</strong> the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting<br />

on those who fear Him, ... to such as keep His<br />

covenant, and to those who remember His<br />

commandments to do them" (Ps. 103:17, 18).<br />

The Law and Gospel at Sinai<br />

There is a close relationship between the<br />

Decalogue and the gospel. The preamble to the<br />

law, for instance, refers to God as the Redeemer<br />

(Ex. 20:1). And following the proclamation <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Ten Commandments, God instructed the Israelites<br />

to erect an altar and begin <strong>of</strong>fering the sacrifices<br />

that were to reveal His saving grace.<br />

It was on Mount Sinai that God gave Moses a<br />

large portion <strong>of</strong> the ceremonial law dealing with<br />
