week that we cannot engage in His service on the<br />

Sabbath.<br />

Because the Sabbath is a <strong>day</strong> <strong>of</strong> special<br />

communion with God in which we are invited to<br />

joyously celebrate His gracious activities in<br />

Creation and redemption, it is important that we<br />

avoid anything that tends to diminish its sacred<br />

atmosphere. The Bible specifies that on the<br />

Sabbath we should cease our secular work (Ex.<br />

20:10), avoiding all work done to earn a living and<br />

all business transactions (Neh. 13:15-22). We are<br />

to honor God, "not doing your own ways, nor<br />

finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own<br />

words" (Isa. 58:13). Devoting this <strong>day</strong> to pleasing<br />

ourselves, to being involved in secular interests,<br />

conversations, and thoughts or to be engaging in<br />

sports would detract from communion with our<br />

Creator and violate the sacredness <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Sabbath.[48] Our concern for the Sabbath<br />

command should extend to all who are under our<br />

jurisdiction--our children, those who work for us,<br />

and even our visitors and animals (Ex. 20:10), so<br />
