c<strong>on</strong>tains extensive informati<strong>on</strong>; list <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> registered pesticides, imported and exported amount, produced<br />

and c<strong>on</strong>sumed amounts at factory’s gate, etc. The survey <strong>on</strong> rice over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last two cycle revealed that<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> statistics <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> KCPA <strong>on</strong> rice was able to represent visiting survey <strong>on</strong> end-user’s level with more<br />

than 90 percent <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> fitness; 5.4 kg <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> TGAI/ha in 2003. Hereafter, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> indicator <strong>on</strong> rice will be<br />

provided with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> producti<strong>on</strong> statistics.<br />

Compliance educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> pesticide safe use<br />

In order to promote compliance through educati<strong>on</strong> activities, Pesticide Safety Divisi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

NIAST supported o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r related organizati<strong>on</strong>s to c<strong>on</strong>duct educati<strong>on</strong> for farmers, pesticides dealer and<br />

public servants regarding agricultural industry. PSD staffs participated in many educati<strong>on</strong> programs<br />

as lecturers.<br />

Pesticide residual m<strong>on</strong>itoring<br />

In Korea, several organizati<strong>on</strong>s are being involved in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> missi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> residue m<strong>on</strong>itoring as far<br />

as agricultural produces are c<strong>on</strong>cerned; Nati<strong>on</strong>al Institute <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Agricultural Science and Technology<br />

(NIAST) in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> field, Nati<strong>on</strong>al Agricultural Products Quality Management Service (NAPQMS) under<br />

MAF at farmer’s gate, and KFDA at basket level. M<strong>on</strong>itoring activities <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticides residues in/<strong>on</strong><br />

agricultural crops in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> field at harvest have been c<strong>on</strong>centrated <strong>on</strong> rice, fresh vegetables and fruits.<br />

The surveyed average residue data showed that no violati<strong>on</strong> was recorded in rice, very small porti<strong>on</strong><br />

(less than 1 percent) <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> violati<strong>on</strong> in fruits, and still small porti<strong>on</strong> (around 1 percent) <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> violati<strong>on</strong> in<br />

vegetables. The m<strong>on</strong>itored data <strong>on</strong> pesticide residue have been fed back to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> farmer so that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y are<br />

able to reference pesticide use calendar to produce listed <strong>on</strong> food chain <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> wholesale markets or<br />

department stores is being d<strong>on</strong>e to provide healthy and safe food supply. In case <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> produce violated<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> MRLs, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> farmer is unable to list his/her produce <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> market for a certain period <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> time.<br />

This voluntary surveillance system devoted in a greater extent to reduce dietary exposure caused by<br />

pesticide residues.<br />

Generati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> temporal maximum residue limit (MRL) and pre-harvest interval<br />

(PHI) <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticides for ensuring safe agro-products<br />

A total <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> temporal 252 MRLs involving 96 active ingredients in 41 agricultural crops were<br />

transferred to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Korean Food and Drug Administrati<strong>on</strong> (KFDA). The MRLs were established from<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> local residue data in/<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> target crops and chr<strong>on</strong>ic toxicity data submitted from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticide<br />

manufacturers. Most MRLs were re-assessed in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Food Safety Committee under KFDA, in which<br />

almost all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> MRLs has established as nati<strong>on</strong>al <strong>on</strong>es. At <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same time, 122 PHIs in 38 crops were<br />

notified by Rural Development Administrati<strong>on</strong> (RDA), which were generated from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> dissipati<strong>on</strong><br />

data <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> residue in/<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> crop and from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir MRLs.<br />
