BANGLADESH<br />

Bangladesh is predominantly an agricultural country with an area <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 147 570 sq. km.<br />

Agriculture plays an important role in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> lives <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Bangladeshi people.<br />

The major crops grown in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> country are rice, wheat, jute, potato, sugarcane, vegetables and<br />

tea. The warm and humid climatic c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> country, increased use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> modern high yielding<br />

varieties <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> crops and more use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> chemical fertilizers are highly favorable for development and<br />

multiplicati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> pests and diseases. The estimated loss in yields due to attacks from pests and<br />

diseases annually ranges from 15 to 25 percent. The severity varies depending <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> variety, seas<strong>on</strong><br />

and climate. The main pests <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ec<strong>on</strong>omic importance in different crops are:<br />

Pest c<strong>on</strong>trol in Bangladesh is dependent <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticides, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> bulk <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> which are in<br />

granular formulati<strong>on</strong>s. However, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> total usage is approximately 20 000 metric t<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> formulated<br />

products which is not high compared to usage in o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r countries in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Asia</str<strong>on</strong>g>-Pacific regi<strong>on</strong>. In<br />

practice, farmers use pesticides <strong>on</strong>ly when infestati<strong>on</strong> is evident; even <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n, <strong>on</strong>ly minimal doses are<br />

applied.<br />
