Testing, quality c<strong>on</strong>trol and effects in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> field<br />

All countries except Singapore have laws specifying <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> quality <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticides, usually<br />

following FAO/WHO standards. All countries except Lao PDR and Singapore possess laboratories<br />

to check <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> quality <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticides, however, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> capacity and number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> analysis per year differs<br />

greatly between <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> countries. Most analyses are d<strong>on</strong>e by India, Thailand and Viet Nam. Relative to<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> amount <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticides sold, however, Cambodia and India made <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most quality checks.<br />

A. Pest Management<br />

Only half <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> countries have data <strong>on</strong> pesticide pois<strong>on</strong>ing cases or possess pois<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>trol or<br />

treatment centers. The number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> reported cases varies greatly and probably reflects more <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> efforts<br />

made by some individuals than <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> actual situati<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> country. Relative to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> amount <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

pesticides used, most pois<strong>on</strong>ing cases were reported from Nepal and Sri Lanka; 70-80 percent <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se cases were intenti<strong>on</strong>al suicides. Reported occupati<strong>on</strong>al and accidental exposure cases<br />

amounted to <strong>on</strong>ly 1.2, 0.5 and 0.2 cases per t<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticide used for Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand,<br />

respectively. Due to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> difficulties in obtaining accurate pois<strong>on</strong>ing estimates that do not <strong>on</strong>ly cover<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most severe cases <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> hospital admissi<strong>on</strong>s, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se figures are not likely to represent an accurate<br />
