Besides <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se, pesticide importati<strong>on</strong> also occurred by illegal importers al<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

unc<strong>on</strong>trollable borders <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Cambodia. A survey d<strong>on</strong>e by local NGOs estimated <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> value <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> farmer<br />

expenditure at about 20 000 000 USD every year (CEDAC, 2004) and approximately 6-9 milli<strong>on</strong><br />

dollars every year (Envir<strong>on</strong>ment Justice Foundati<strong>on</strong>).<br />

E. Selected standards<br />

Effort made by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> government to reduce risks associated with pesticide in term <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> toxicity,<br />

packaging, labeling and applicati<strong>on</strong> method is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> establishment <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> legislati<strong>on</strong> and regulati<strong>on</strong>s as<br />

menti<strong>on</strong> in point B. Fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rmore PPPIO c<strong>on</strong>ducted a program “Safe Use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pesticide” which aims<br />

to provide knowledge <strong>on</strong> selecti<strong>on</strong> and applicati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticides in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> field, and preventi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

pesticide hazards to human health and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> envir<strong>on</strong>ment. In additi<strong>on</strong> a collaborati<strong>on</strong> with o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<br />

agencies c<strong>on</strong>ducting a program called “Safe and Resp<strong>on</strong>sible Use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pesticide” (SARUP) with<br />

similar objective above to expand activities in whole country. SARUP program was initially<br />

established in 1995 by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> DAALI and supported by Japanese Internati<strong>on</strong>al Cooperati<strong>on</strong> Agency<br />

(JICA) for two years and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Royal Government <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Cambodia decided to allocate funds to<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tinue this important program. Moreover, Crop Life <str<strong>on</strong>g>Asia</str<strong>on</strong>g> has recently supported a pilot program<br />

since year 2002.<br />

Moreover trainings c<strong>on</strong>ducted by local NGOs such as CEDAC and NGOs Forum <strong>on</strong> pesticide<br />

hazards and its alternatives to farmers who grown vegetables and cash crops located in major<br />

agricultural provinces around T<strong>on</strong>le Sap Lake, Mek<strong>on</strong>g River and areas <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> intensive use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticides<br />

al<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> border <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Cambodia.<br />
