In June, the US fibre optics manufacturer Tyco
Submarine Systems acquired Temasa, the maritime
division of the Spanish telecommunications operator
Telefonica, with its three cable laying vessels.
Modern unit requirements are significant, both for maintenance
and cable laying operations. Nonetheless, some
analysts expect a weakening in demand from telecom
operators in five years.
Seismic vessels
The slowdown that was anticipated last year did indeed
occur, and many vessels were demobilised. Geko Prakla
put its oldest units up for sale. It is less a question of
selling them to competitors than it is of finding buyers
that can use these ships in other market sectors.
French market
In the French market, large effort of investments of the
Bourbon group’s maritime division materialised. Three
new type UT 719/2 supply ships joined the fleet, the
“Weza”, “Kiesse” and “Malila”, destined for use in
Angola. Also, numerous tugs for the ports of Le Havre,
Dunkerque, Marseilles, Abidjan and Mayotte were also
delivered.
