Main lines have from 13,000 to 16,000 hooks each and
are laid over hundreds of nautical miles. They are also
heavily ballasted to ensure that they sink rapidly once in
the water, avoiding the entrapment of endangered bird
species such as the albatross and the petrel.
A certain number of vessels have been taken under bare-boat
charter or bought on the second-hand market and refitted,
including “Northern Pride”, “Norse Pride”, “Shinko Maru
n°11” and “Aldebaran I”.
The sale of “San Aotea” (40 meters of lenght, longliner,
built in Norway in 1988, 1,000 bhp) for about 3 million $
indicates the firm interest for such ships nowadays.
The likelihood of both sustained high catches and price
levels seems uncertain. Harvesting of toothfish - which
can live up to 56 years according to the Museum of
Natural History - is being regulated by countries in whose
waters the southern fishing zones fall, in an effort to
conserve their resources.
On both the domestic and international markets, the
importance acquired by the Piriou shipyard at Concarneau
and its R&D section specialised in fishing technology, are
greatly contributing to maintaining French expertise
levels and a sizeable fleet.
The orders of two tuna freezer seiners at the Piriou shipyard
were managed through a “GIE fiscal”. It is important
to note that fishing vessels were excluded from the previous
fiscal investment scheme: now there exists a significant
hope factor for shipowners who can renew their fleets
using the tax-lease GIE method, which entails a savings
of roughly 20% on new vessel orders.
This scheme can function all the better considering that
fishing vessel shipowners behave like long-term industrial
investors. Additionally, the GIE scheme requirement of
retaining vessels under French registration for a minimum
of 64 months does not constitute an obstacle to maintaining
the fishing fleet.
