ONBOARD Magazine autumn 2023

ONBOARD is aimed purely at the superyacht professional – whether onboard or shoreside. 100% of your spend will hit your targets on the Mediterranean from Palma in Mallorca, Barcelona, through France to Genoa and beyond together with Montenegro and the Aegean, plus the eastern seaboard of Florida. We hand deliver every copy to superyachts over 30m to make sure your message gets in to the hands of the decision makers on board. The publication is also delivered to relevant businesses around the ports and marinas together with shipyards. We also attend the major yacht shows in Monaco, FLIBS, METS, Boote Dusseldorf, Palma and MYBA for on site distribution. Plus, we post over 500 copies to relevant businesses not on the Mediterranean such as the UK, the Netherlands, Germany the rest of northern Europe and of course the USA and Caribbean. We work hard to develop a publication that all the crew and land based decision makers will read from cover to cover. An enjoyable and informative read for everyone means your message will be read. Talking about your brand, product, services and your team is essential and with our help, the message hits the right decision makers.

UPFRONT
OPINIONS, FACTS, STORIES AND WHAT’S NEW
IN THE FASCINATING WORLD OF YACHTING
YACHTIE TYPES
THE KNOW IT ALL NEWBIE
They’ve arrived in Antibes fresh from
their zero to hero courses (where they’ve
been horribly oversold but that’s another
story), they’ve watched all episodes
of Below Deck and they clearly know
more than you about the superyacht
industry. 2500 euro salary? Not getting
out of bed for that, they want at least
3500 euros plus a busy charter boat
with tips. Also they will expect to get 12
hours undisturbed sleep each night, 5
breaks a day, plenty of time off to explore
the destinations they’re docking at (it’s
ok they don’t mind going on the trips
with the actual paying guests, that’s
acceptable), and to be able to document
EVERYTHING on TikTok.
Seems reasonable….
400
It is estimated that only 400
monk seals remain in the
Mediterranean Sea
WHAT’S HOT...
GOING TO THE MOVIES is definitely back in style.
With the two summer smashes of Oppenheimer
and Barbie bringing people back to theatres in their
droves this is a breath of new life for the cinema
industry who’ve suffered since Covid. Hey, popcorn
and air con, what’s not to love?
GLOBAL WARMING Climate change, whatever you
wanna call it, it’s A Thing. Europe, this summer
season, has literally been on fire wherever you
look. Across the continent almost 30% more
land has burned than the 20 year average, with
Greece’s average rocketing by over 80%! And yes,
naysayers, it’s all linked back to the ever increasing
temperatures. The superyacht industry is coming
under scrutiny, will the eco warriors be out in force
during the autumn shows?
FAVE CELEBS This summer we’ve seen plenty out
enjoying the high seas. Conor McGregor on his new
Tecnomar For Lamborghini 63, Drake filming a video
on MY Coral Ocean, Jeff Bezos on his new toy SY
Koru, the paps have had a field day.
MARINE CLEANUP Talking about the environment,
in July the Marine Cleanup Initiative took MY Time,
a 39m vessel which had been ashore for nearly
20 years, and with McCully Marine Services Inc
and the St Lucie County Artificial Reef Programme
Florida, sunk it to create an artificial reef. The
yacht was carefully stripped down of anything
which could be potentially harmful to the sea life,
and decommissioned. What a great way to give
something back to the oceans.
AND NOT...
DID YOU KNOW?
Adult whale sharks have the
thickest skin of any animal
The sea is an underwater
museum still awaiting its
visitors
Phillip Diole
NAUTICAL HEROES
MARK RICHARDS
Mark Richards is an Australian sailor
and boatbuilder, known for his legendary
achievements as the long-time skipper
of Wild Oats XI, nine times line honours
winner of the annual Rolex Sydney Hobart
Yacht race. As a professional sailor,
Richards has sailed in two Americas Cup
challenges, has achieved World Match
Racing victories, has won the Sydney to
Gold Coast yacht race, the 2003 Admirals
Cup, and has taken out line honours and
handicap honours in the prestigious Rolex
Sydney to Hobart races.
CAPRI PANTS Remember capri pants and Bermuda
shorts? Well according to our fashion sources,
they’ve made a comeback. The booty shorts are out!
Hailey Bieber, Gigi Hadid, Nicola Peltz, Kourtney
Kardashian, all the cool kids are wearing them so
for those of us whose bottoms may have headed a
little south in recent years, this can only be a good
thing.
THROWING STUFF Can people, like, stop throwing
stuff at celebrities please? What the heck is going
on here – it seems like every day we’re seeing
another incident. Let’s hope more go like Cardi
B who walloped a “fan” with her mic with an
incredible throw after said “fan” chucked a drink at
her. Seriously people. Rude. Stop it.
SALARIES We’ve got to say it again. Salaries…
yachts are discovering that if they dig their heels in
and refuse to raise salaries or offer other incentives
(more paid time off, training etc) they’re losing crew.
The tides have turned, and now, if they want good
crew, they have to pay for them.
