Scenic values : <strong>The</strong> steep, high linear dunes of red <strong>sa</strong>nd create an archetypal<br />

Arabian desert landscape of great beauty.<br />

Key animals : <strong>The</strong> following mammals have been r<strong>eco</strong>rded in the area:<br />

Rueppell's fox (Vulpes rueppelli), red fox (Vulpes vulpes); <strong>sa</strong>nd cat (Felis margarita),<br />

Caspe hare (Lepus capensis); Cheesman's gerbil (Gerbillus cheesmani), lesser<br />

jerboa (Jaculus jaculus), and feral dogs. Arabian oryx, idmi and reem gazelles have<br />

been re-established through a reintroduction programme.<br />

<strong>The</strong> current bird list contains around 120 species, including the Lappet-faced<br />

vulture, and migrant houbara bustards.<br />

Cultural Features<br />

Traditional uses : Camel grazing, and access route to winter grazing grounds in<br />

the deep desert.<br />

Cultural importance : <strong>The</strong> Tuwayq escarpment marked the route <strong>for</strong> the southern<br />

overland spice trade from Yemen.<br />

Historical features : Few within the actual protected area, but on the plains below<br />

the escarpment lies the ruins of the ancient trade route stop-over of Al-Fau, currently<br />

the site of on-going archaeological excavations by the King Saud University, Riyadh.<br />

PA Infrastructure<br />

Border demarcation : <strong>The</strong> escarpment marks the western edge. Other<br />

boundaries are unmarked but locally well known by landmarks and named inter-dune<br />

corridors.<br />

Rangers/other staff : <strong>The</strong> reserve has a complement of around 20 NCWCD<br />

rangers, plus support staff, based in three camps: northern, central (main camp<br />

adjacent the main track up the escarpment), and southern.<br />

Responsibilities of rangers : NCWCD rangers primarily undertake patrols of the<br />

reserve's boundaries and interior, and s<strong>eco</strong>ndarily provide supervision of visiting<br />

groups, and assistance with broader monitoring and research programmes as<br />

required, including liaison with scientific staff and aerial patrols; maintenance of<br />

camps and reporting of incidental wildlife sightings;. NCWCD rangers are not officially<br />

empowered to arrest or detain offenders, nor to confiscate property.
