2 = attractive scenery with wide public appeal, e.g. small areas<br />

of permanent or temporary water, relatively dense natural<br />

vegetation, tall <strong>sa</strong>nd dunes, hills and rocky outcrops.<br />

3 = landscapes with limited or specialised public appeal, e.g.<br />

steppe deserts, harrats, undulating plains with limited<br />

vegetative cover, or <strong>sa</strong>nd sheets.<br />

4 = landscapes with low public appeal, e.g. gravel or <strong>sa</strong>ndy<br />

plains with little or no vegetative cover.<br />

Wildlife 1 = presence of high profile, flagship, species, or a high diversity<br />

or density of wildlife, virtually guaranteed to be seen by the<br />

majority of visitors, e.g. Arabian oryx..<br />

2 = presence of high profile species, or a moderate diversity or<br />

density of wildlife, that are likely to be seen by the majority<br />

of visitors, e.g. <strong>sa</strong>nd gazelles, ibex.<br />

3 = presence of certain key species, e.g. rare or threatened, or<br />

a low density or diversity of wildlife, that will be seen by only<br />

some visitors, e.g. houbara bustard; mountain gazelles.<br />

4 = either very low density or diversity of wildlife, or high profile<br />

species, but extremely wary and unlikely to be seen by any<br />

visitors, e.g. Arabian leopard; Arabian wolf; striped hyena.<br />

Note: Wildlife rating takes into account the wildlife visibility<br />

classifications <strong>for</strong> key species (see above).<br />

Cultural/historical 1 = features with high public r<strong>eco</strong>gnition and broad public<br />

appeal, e.g. Medain Saleh (Nabatean city north of Medina);<br />

remnants of the Hijaz railway bombed by Lawrence of<br />

Arabia; religious (Islamic) sites, particularly those<br />

associated with the Prophet.<br />

2 = features with moderate public appeal, e.g. ruined<br />

caravanserai or Turkish <strong>for</strong>ts; early mosques and <strong>for</strong>ts of<br />

the Islamic period; pre-historic rock etchings depicting<br />

wildlife.<br />

3 = features with limited or only specialised public appeal, e.g.<br />

pre-historic (pre-Islamic) sites; harvest of traditional plants<br />

<strong>for</strong> food or medicines.<br />

4 = lacking any features of interest.<br />

Facilities 1 = at least basic facilities, e.g. toilets, rubbish dispo<strong>sa</strong>l, picnic<br />

sites, meeting room, first aid, already present on site.<br />

2 = some basic facilities, e.g. toilets, first aid, accessible to<br />

visitors.<br />
