“Environmentally-oriented tourism, or eco-tourism, is one of the most
promising approaches to making protected areas economically productive,
because at least in theory it is non-consumptive and can enhance rural
economic productivity while reducing environmental costs. In reality ecotourism
requires careful management to live up to its name, and avoid
negative impacts on wildlife resources upon which it depends.
…
Tourism is bound to increase in Saudi Arabia, and the National Commission
for Wildlife Conservation and Development bears a major responsibility to
take the lead in providing models that are truly environmentally sensitive.
ensure that tourism in protected areas becomes eco-tourism in the full sense
of the word.”
Eugene Joubert et al. (1996). Draft discussion document on the
NCWCD’s strategy for sustainable development.
