Time Machine
Time Machine is a revolutionary backup system that keeps track of your data over a period of
time. In order to use Time Machine, you must have a separate hard drive for backups, but once
configured, Time Machine will automatically keep track of your data should you ever need to
recover from a hard drive failure or accidental data loss. Additionally, since Time Machine keeps
track of changes over a period of time, you can recover lost or deleted files (or versions of files)
from the past. The Time Machine interface is shown in Figure A-7.
Besides just working on the file system, Time Machine, when launched within certain applications,
can also help recover files specific to that app. For example, when launched from Mail,
Time Machine can recover old messages that have been deleted from your mailbox.
Improved Parental Controls
APPENDIX A WHAT’S NEW WITH LEOPARD 531
Besides protecting your data, Leopard also includes parental controls to allow you to control the
activities of specified users on the computer. The parental controls in Leopard allow you to do
the following:
• Choose what applications a specific user can use
• Filter what content a user has access to on the Internet using built-in filters, or by explicitly
allowing or denying specific web sites
• Keep logs of a user’s activities
• Set time limits for what times the computer is available to a specific user, and how much
time per day it’s acceptable for them to use it (Figure A-8)
