BIODIEPRO Objectives The project will demonstrate an environmentally sensitive solution for the safe disposal of animal by-products, increase the knowledge of biodiesel production and investigate the potential in the fuel supply sector. It will be necessary undertake first life cycle analysis of biodiesel produced from RVO and tallow. Biodiesel from tallow and ‘Recovered Vegetable Oil’ (RVO) Problems to be solved Argent Energy Limited is to establish the first European large-scale biodiesel manufacturing facility, using both RVO and tallow, for sale to oil companies. The project will demonstrate an environmentally sensitive solution for the safe disposal of animal by-products, increase the knowledge of biodiesel production and investigate the potential in the fuel supply sector. It will be necessary to undertake first life cycle analysis of biodiesel produced from RVO and tallow. The project will contribute to the European fuel standards setting by generating data on the feasibility of producing biodiesel to specific technical characteristics. The project will demonstrate that TSE protein prions are neutralised or eradicated by the transesterification process to the satisfaction of the Scientific Screening Committee (SSC) and achieve an SSC (or replacement body) declaration of the process. 176 Project structure and partnerships There are six main work packages to the project: • Design and construction of the biodiesel production demonstration plant • Commissioning and testing – optimising production and developing the supply chain • Development – testing techniques for product quality control, co-product processing • Analysis and evaluation – analysis of the plant performance, including financial and environmental performance • Dissemination – promoting the results of the project to wider stakeholders • Project management, including reporting on progress to the Commission. The diagram (see next page) demonstrates how the consortium, the main subcontractor and the parties involved with the project, covers a range of different functions along the supply chain.
Expected results and exploitation plans This project aims to demonstrate a multifeedstock biodiesel production facility that uses a mixture of animal tallow and RVO, rather than virgin oils. The plant will have the potential to produce 45 000 tonnes of biodiesel per annum, which represents 14% of the current UK diesel market when used as a 2% blend with mineral diesel. In addition, the project seeks to develop and demonstrate a new supply chain providing a complete integrated solution for the safe treatment and recovery of energy from animal by-products. Progress to date The project began in January 2003 and is, therefore, at a very early stage with literature reviews and limited scientific analysis having been undertaken.
