THERMONET Objectives ThermoNet is constituted from two complementary networks – PyNe (the Biomass Pyrolysis Network) and GasNet (the Biomass Gasification Network). Each network provides a platform for discussion and information exchange on scientific and technological developments on biomass pyrolysis and biomass gasification, and also on related technologies for the production of liquid fuels, electricity and chemicals. The networks also aid the development of the technologies. The EC Energy Programme sponsors them both; PyNe is also sponsored by IEA Bioenergy and GasNet by Novem. PyNe and Gasnet thermal biomass conversion networks Challenges The Networks meet regularly and review a range of technical and non-technical topics that are pertinent to each network and, in particular, address issues where there is an overlap and a common interest. The meetings include focused seminars and workshops with invited experts where appropriate and the topics covered by the ThermoNet Cluster are shown in the diagram below. New developments and ongoing activities are also covered in the PyNe and GasNet newsletters that are both published biannually. Project structure The concept for the project started in 1995 with a network on fast pyrolysis of biomass for liquid fuels and it has expanded into ThermoNet, which is a cluster of two networks on thermal processing of biomass for fuels and electricity. One of the networks addresses biomass pyrolysis, known as PyNe, and the other, addressing biomass gasification, is known as GasNet. Each network has its own work programme but they share a common focus on the commercialisation and market implementation issues of their respective technologies. The thermal processing of biomass has the potential to offer a major contribution to meeting the increasing demands of the bio-energy and renewable energy sectors and to meet the targets set by the EC and member countries for CO2 mitigation. The networks provide a forum for all involved and interested in gasification and pyrolysis of biomass and waste to discuss, review and address technical and non-technical 62 issues that inhibit rapid and widespread implementation of these technologies. The ThermoNet project was initiated in June 2001 and runs for 36 months, ending in May 2004. The total project cost was €1.2 million with a contribution from the EC of €0.8 million and additional contributions from IEA Bioenergy and Novem. The benefits The networks encourage the discussion and resolution of technical issues and the global promotion of pyrolysis and gasification with a commitment to the wide dissemination of information. For example, outputs include: • two hard-backed reference publications on the pyrolysis of biomass, • one hard-backed edited version on the conference proceedings on pyrolysis and gasification of biomass and waste, • the publication of a biannual newsletter for each network • organising conferences, workshops and seminars. The networks provide a forum to explore and help advance the technologies. They aid more rapid and effective market penetration through dissemination and active resolution of technical problems. They actively promote the technologies to both industry and policy- and decision-makers. They act as a unified body in proposing research topics and take the initiative in new projects; for example in examining the competitiveness of pyrolysis liquids in the marketplace and promoting a study on the toxicity of bio-oil in order to establish a standard for approval and authorisation for use in the EU.
Progress to date Both networks regularly organise seminars and workshops, arrange visits to commercial plants and research and development facilities, commission special reports, publish biannual newsletters and a website and actively promote biomass conversion technologies and applications for the resultant bio-fuels. Technical advances in the topics are achieved through specially focussed workshops and through commissioned work from specialists in the area. Both pyrolysis and gasification of biomass have benefited considerably from the interactions promoted in the networks and from the high profile publicity resulting from the publications. 63 Thermonet Structure.
