única restauración reciente en
CinemaScope es Lola Montès (1955),
llevada a cabo por la cinemateca de
Munich. El público pudo comprobar la
superioridad de la versión restaurada,
incluso en su formato digital.
Tom Gunning estuvo a cargo del tema
de la retrospectiva “hace cien años”,
dedicada en esta ocasión a 1903. Las
cinco sesiones fueron verdaderas
lecciones de historia del cine en vivo.
La retrospectiva de Léonce Perret
comprendió el período de 1910-1923,
con estupendas copias reconstruidas y
restauradas por le Cinémathèque
Gaumont y la Cinemathèque
française y fue acompañada por una
monografía. También se proyectaron
filmes de otro autor de Gaumont,
Jean Durand, y tampoco faltó la
muestra dedicada a las “stars”
mundiales, en esta ocasión a
Francesca Bertini (1888-1985), una
verdadera figura de culto que
intervino en sus trabajos
seleccionando guiones y directores. La
situación de su filmografía es
analizada en un nuevo libro de
Gianfranco Mingozzi. Se proyectó la
serie de siete largometrajes bajo el
título I sette peccati capitali (Los siete
pecados capitales, 1918-19), restaurada
por el Narodni Filmovy Archiv en 1991.
La sección “Dossiers” comprende la
proyección de fragmentos y descartes.
No se trata en ningún caso de
reconstrucciones, sino de
investigaciones sobre películas
perdidas, como tuvo a bien destacar
Janet Bergstrom en su presentación
de Murnau´s “4 Devils”: Traces of a
Lost Film, dentro del “Dossier
Murnau”. También se presentaron un
“Dossier Sjöstrom” y un “Dossier
Stiller”, ambos a cargo de Jon
Wengström (Cinemateket/Svenska
Filminstitutet), y el “Dossier
Eisenstein”.
Tampoco faltó la habitual sección de
“Ritrovati & Restaurati”, y la gala que
este año se centró en el Proyecto
Chaplin con la proyección de A Dog’ s
Life (1918) y The Circus (1928), así como
de las primeras imágenes restauradas
de las películas Keystone de Chaplin:
toda una experiencia.
The evening gala screenings were distinguished by ambitious musical
interpretation. Jacques Feyder’s masterpiece about childhood in the
Swiss Haut-Valais, Visages d’enfants (1923), was accompanied by
Antonio Coppola and L’Octuor de France. The music for the engrossing
Redskin (1929) was provided by the duo National Braid (= Laura Ortman
and Brad Kahlhamer) with a good spirit of experimentation but too
much repetition. Authentic silent cinema themes were beautifully
resurrected by Philip Carli and an eight-man band for Chang (1927). The
most daring project was the film of the closing gala, Leone Roberto
Roberti’s Napoli che canta (The Song of Naples, 1926), the haunting
“elegy to Mediterranian culture” (Paolo Cherchi Usai), a silent song film
with lyrics of Neapolitan songs in the intertitles. In Bologna’s
Neapolitan film evenings, such films have been tackled with beautiful
traditional music by two guitarists. Le Giornate took a step further. The
great soprano Giuni Russo with her collaborators had arranged the
songs into a stirring suite played live together with a band.
Also in Sacile, the screenings are often introduced by experts, but the
main emphasis of the discussions is in the daily conferences of the
Collegium Sacilensis, bringing new friends of the festival into contact
with veterans, and in the evening meetings of the abundant Film Fair.
