Discussion<br />

The ma<strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs of this study are that <strong>in</strong> Piedmont the reported tuberculosis <strong>in</strong>cidence<br />

rates are largely underestimated. Although Piedmont rema<strong>in</strong>s a low-prevalence area, the<br />

burden of tuberculosis is higher than was previously thought. Record-l<strong>in</strong>kage considerably<br />

improved the estimated case-ascerta<strong>in</strong>ment to 93.3%. The capture-<strong>recapture</strong> estimate of<br />

underreport<strong>in</strong>g of 21% is almost twice that of the WHO for Italy as a whole. 5 The
