<strong>Rob</strong> <strong>van</strong> <strong>Hest</strong> was born on October 17, 1958 <strong>in</strong> Tilburg, the Netherlands. After pass<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the Atheneum B exam at the Cobbenhagen College <strong>in</strong> Tilburg <strong>in</strong> 1977 he studied<br />
psychology for one year at the University of Tilburg. In 1978 he started his medical<br />
studies at the University of Nijmegen. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the junior house officer rotations he spent<br />
5 months as a student doctor at St. Anthony’s Hospital <strong>in</strong> Dzodze, Volta Region, Ghana,<br />
for the elective “Medical care <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g countries”. After obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g his medical degree<br />
<strong>in</strong> 1987 he <strong>in</strong>itially worked for the Ambulance Service West-Betuwe <strong>in</strong> Tiel. From 1988<br />
until 1991, <strong>in</strong> the context of the tropical doctor tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, he was a senior house officer <strong>in</strong><br />
the St Anna Hospital <strong>in</strong> Oss (Internal Medic<strong>in</strong>e and Surgery) and the IJsselland Hospital<br />
<strong>in</strong> Rotterdam (Obstetrics and Gynaecology). Afterwards he completed the Course <strong>in</strong><br />
Tropical Medic<strong>in</strong>e for Doctors at the Royal Tropical Institute <strong>in</strong> Amsterdam. Between<br />
1991 and 1996 he worked as medical officer <strong>in</strong>-charge at the Mary-Theresa Hospital <strong>in</strong><br />
Dodi Papase, Volta-Region, Ghana. In 1997 he obta<strong>in</strong>ed the Master of Science degree <strong>in</strong><br />
Control of Infectious Diseases at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medic<strong>in</strong>e,<br />
London, United K<strong>in</strong>gdom. In 1998 he began his tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g as a public health physician<br />
(tuberculosis control) at the Netherlands School of Public Health and his work as a<br />
tuberculosis control physician at the Tuberculosis Control Section of the Municipal<br />
Public Health Service Rotterdam-Rijnmond and later also at the Tuberculosis Control<br />
Section of the Municipal Health Service Zuid-Holland Zuid <strong>in</strong> Dordrecht. In 2000 he<br />
obta<strong>in</strong>ed the Master of Science degree <strong>in</strong> Epidemiology and registration as<br />
epidemiologist-A from the Dutch Society for Epidemiology. After complet<strong>in</strong>g his tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong> public health medic<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> December 2000, he was registered as a public health<br />
physician. He cont<strong>in</strong>ued to work as a tuberculosis control physician at the Municipal<br />
Public Health Service Rotterdam-Rijnmond where, <strong>in</strong> 2002, he officially started this PhD<br />
part-time (0.1 FTE) <strong>in</strong> collaboration with the Department of Public Health of the<br />
Erasmus MC, University Medical Centre Rotterdam, <strong>in</strong> Rotterdam. S<strong>in</strong>ce 2002 he is also a<br />
visit<strong>in</strong>g tuberculosis control physician with the mobile digital tuberculosis screen<strong>in</strong>g<br />
project among homeless persons, problematic drug users, alcoholics and prisoners <strong>in</strong><br />
London, where he is registered as a specialist <strong>in</strong> Public Health Medic<strong>in</strong>e as well. Apart<br />
from this thesis he has published various peer-reviewed articles on different aspects of<br />
tuberculosis and tuberculosis control <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational and Dutch journals.<br />
