1 The Madrid Union is composed of the States party to the Madrid Agreement and the<br />
contracting parties to the Madrid Protocol.<br />
2 All the States party to the Madrid Agreement have <strong>de</strong>clared, un<strong>de</strong>r Article 3 bis of the<br />
Nice or Stockholm Act, that the protection arising from international registration shall not<br />
extend to them unless the proprietor of the mark so requests.<br />
3 As from 1 January 1971, the territories in Europe of Belgium, Luxembourg and the<br />
Netherlands are, for the application of the Madrid Agreement, to be <strong>de</strong>emed a single<br />
country.<br />
4 In accordance with Article 14 (2) of the Madrid Agreement, this State <strong>de</strong>clared that the<br />
application of the Stockholm Act was limited to marks registered from the date on which<br />
accession entered into force: China: 4 October 1989; Poland: 18 March 1991.<br />
5 Including all overseas <strong>de</strong>partments and territories.<br />
6 These are the alternative dates of entry into force which the Director General of WIPO<br />
communicated to the States concerned.<br />
7 The instrument of ratification of the Stockholm Act was <strong>de</strong>posited for the Kingdom in<br />
Europe.<br />
8 Date of accession by the Soviet Union, continued by the Russian Fe<strong>de</strong>ration as from 25<br />
December 1991.
