Active Oral-Genital Sex among Heterosexual Adults
elsewhere (Dupras et aL, 1989b). Subjects were selected by random
145
dialing within the Montreal are a, Canada, where more than 90% of
the population are white Caucasian, and more than 80% speak
French. Of the 1,204 French speaking, 18 years and over selected
persons, 41,8% had volunteered to participate in the study and to
receive by mail, by the end of 1987, a questionnaire on the frequencies
of their individual sexual behaviors. The participation rate was
equivalent to similar postal surveys about sexual behaviors (Greatorex
and Packer, 1989). A total of 407 useable questionnaires were returned.
Three facts may have contributed in explaining this high return rate
(81.5%): questionnaires were sent only to volunteers; a $5-bill
incentive was included in each questionnaire; and two recall phone
calls were made to each subject. The present study is concerned only
with respondents who were exclusively heterosexual, and who were
married or cohabiting-123 women and 89 men. Their mean age was
36.9 years, and women were significantly younger than men, with
mean ages of 34.4 and 40.2 years, respectively. There were 112 subjects
between 18-34 years of age, 61 were between 35-54, and 38 were 55 years
and over-one woman failed to indicate her age. The 149 married
subjects were significantly older than the 63 cohabiting subjects, with
me an ages of 40.7 and 27.9 years, respectively. Forty-nine subjects have
indicated living with their current partner for less than 5 years
among whom 15 for less than 2 years; 59 from 5 to 10 years; 61 from 11
to 20 years, and 40 for 21 or more years-three individuals failed to
indicate the duration of their relationship. Seventy subjects were
childless, 50 had one child, 55 two children, and 37 three and more
children. Respondents have been categorized in two groups according
to their main occupations (Bureau International du Travail, 1976): 48
subjects were non-manual workers (professionals, business pers ons,
salespersons, office employees), and 111 manual workers (craftsmen,
foremen, skilled, semi-skilled or unskilled workers), the remaining
being jobless or of undefined occupations.
The questionnaire's main focus was on individual knowledge,
attitudes and sexual behaviors as related to concerns about AIDS
(Dupras et aL, 1989b). Among questions related to personal sexual
behaviors, subjects were asked how many times, during 1987, they had
stimulated with the mouth the genitals of their regular sexual
partner. The subjects were also presented with four questions
addressing satisfaction with one's sexual life. That is, satisfaction with:
a) the frequency of sexual relations with one's regular partner; b) the
strength of one's sexual pleasure; c) the intensity of one's sexual
