PERCEPTIONS OF PERSONAL RISK<br />

FROM SEXUAL TRANSMISSION OF HIV<br />

The developm<strong>en</strong>t of a perception of personal susceptibility or<br />

insusceptibility to HIV infection as a result of sexual activity is examined<br />

using data collected from 866 CEGEP stud<strong>en</strong>ts in Montreal in the winter of<br />

1988-1989. The influ<strong>en</strong>ce of eues, as conceptualized in the Health Belief<br />

Model, judgm<strong>en</strong>tal heuristics, as conceptualized by Kahneman and Tversky<br />

(1972, 1979), and the prev<strong>en</strong>tive actions which young adults c<strong>la</strong>imed to be<br />

taking on risk perception were examined using both survey and interview<br />

data. Conting<strong>en</strong>cy table and logit analyses of survey data led to the<br />

conclusion that m<strong>en</strong>'s risk perceptions were most strongly influ<strong>en</strong>ced by<br />

contact with fri<strong>en</strong>ds who had be<strong>en</strong> tested for HIV, and secondarily by<br />

having had more than one coital partner. While these factors also<br />

influ<strong>en</strong>ced risk perception on the part of wom<strong>en</strong>, they only held for wom<strong>en</strong><br />

who were not curr<strong>en</strong>tly in a re<strong>la</strong>tionship. Analysis of interviews suggested<br />

that judgm<strong>en</strong>tal heuristics p<strong>la</strong>yed an interv<strong>en</strong>ing role which exp<strong>la</strong>ined the<br />

developm<strong>en</strong>t of particu<strong>la</strong>r perceptions and the g<strong>en</strong>der differ<strong>en</strong>ces found in<br />

logit analyses.<br />

Prev<strong>en</strong>ting AlOS requires a voluntary change in behaviors which<br />

permit the transmission of the human immunodefici<strong>en</strong>cy virus<br />

(HIV). Oespite re<strong>la</strong>tively widespread dissemination of in<strong>format</strong>ion<br />

about HIV transmission and methods of prev<strong>en</strong>tion, empirical work<br />

has docum<strong>en</strong>ted the persist<strong>en</strong>ce of risky behaviors. This leads to the<br />

question, "Why do people continue to take risks?" ln a review of<br />

health promotion research, Mays et al. (1989) suggest that the key<br />

factor motivating prev<strong>en</strong>tive action is a perception of personal<br />
