took place at the completion of the interview preceding the blood
collection. Interviews were conducted between May and Oecember
1989.
The study employed an interview schedule which had been piloted
on over 100 injecting drug us ers and subsequently modified. Sections
covered demographics, drug use behaviour, use of new
equipment/reuse of own equipment, sharing of injection equipment,
cleaning of injection equipment, disposaI of used injection
equipment, social context of injecting drug use, sexual history,
knowledge and attitudes about HIV / AlOS, HIV / AlOS prevention
behaviours, sources of HIV / AlOS information, HIV / AlOS antibody
testing, and modules on treatment and prison use if appropriate.
Response possibilities ranged from closed options to open-ended
questions. AlI response possibilities were provided on show-cards
where appropriate (a copy of the full 36 page interview schedule is
available from the first author on request). The interview took on
average 1.25 hours to complete. Sexual orientation of respondents was
defined by gender of sexual partners in the past five years with
bisexuals reporting at least one sexual contact with males and females
in this period.
The question under consideration in this study was worded "For
each of the last two people you have had sex with, please tick to show
their se x, whether they were heterosexual, homosexual or bisexual, a
prostitute (male or female), or an intravenous drug user." An
example was provided ("FOR EXAMPLE: if the last person you had sex
with was a bisexual woman wo used intravenous drugs, you would
fill in the first line like this ... " ), and a row each for person 1 and
person 2 with boxes for ticks under the headings Male, Female;
Homosexual, Heterosexual, Bisexual; Prostitute; IV Orug User. The 24
possible combinations of variables were computed and tabulated by
frequency for both the last and second-Iast sexual partner. For each
variable, cases with missing data were excluded from analysis. Missing
data could occur because either respondents did not know the details
of their last sexual parter, or because they reported no sexual activity
in the past year. Data for time elapsed between last and second-Iast
sexual encounter were not obtained. For males and for females, the
differences in category frequencies were compared for last and second­
last sexual partners by the X2 test. Estimation of HIV prevalence in this
sample has been reported elsewhere (Ross, Gold, Wodak & Miller,
1991): 6.8% reported HIV infection from the results of previous HIV
testing or had serological markers of HIV infection.
